What Grade 1 is, and what it is not
The CIDB register grades contractors so public bodies know who can bid for what. Grade 1 is the entry grade, the one available to a new construction company with no completed public works behind it. Higher grades are earned with track record and financials, and no registration agent can shortcut that assessment. If somebody offers to place a brand-new company at a higher grade, be careful.

The CSD listing is genuinely part of this, so do not order CSD registration separately as well — that is paying twice for one profile.
Choose the class of works carefully
The application asks for a class: civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical building, or electrical infrastructure. That choice controls which tenders you are eligible for, so describe the work you actually do rather than the work you would like to do. A firm graded into the wrong class usually finds out while reading tender eligibility criteria, and correcting it is not a five-minute change.
CIDB assesses, we file
Worth being blunt about. We prepare and submit the application. CIDB decides the grading against its own criteria and on its own timeline. Nothing here is a promise of an outcome or a date, and any agent promising one is guessing.
Regulators that are not CIDB
Construction attracts several bodies and they are not interchangeable. NHBRC governs home builders and is a separate registration. PSIRA covers security services, not building. COIDA is the Compensation Fund, and a bid file will want your Letter of Good Standing.
The rest of a public works bid file
A tender usually wants CIDB grading, a CSD profile, a SARS tax compliance PIN, a B-BBEE affidavit, and a COIDA Letter of Good Standing. Five documents from five bodies, each on its own clock, which is why bid files are best assembled before a deadline exists.
If the company is not registered yet, the construction company bundle does the incorporation and these extras together — less admin than buying them one at a time.
